This is a perfect mid range to high end virtualisation solution with attached shared storage. The new Intel Xeon E5630 CPUs with QPI technology and DDR3 ECC REG memory have all been designed to maximise the full potential of VMware whist saving energy and increasing performance by up to 45%.

The Intel SR1625URSAS is a 1U rackmount server solution with up to 8 x hotswap drive bays, 2 x 650 watt high-efficiency power supplies and 5 x non-redundant system fans. The motherboard is a S5520URR which is an enterprise level server board, designed to use dual Intel Xeon Westmere CPUs and has 12 x DDR3 memory dims through 6 channels (max 96GB) 5 x PCIe slots and 1 x PCI 32 / 33MHz slot. The board also has Intel’s IPMI 2.0 and an option for KVM-IP.

The VMware software provides an all-in-one solution for small offices to virtualize three physical servers for consolidating and managing applications with a low up front investment, reducing hardware and operating costs. It delivers the performance and reliability of enterprise class solutions yet is perfect for new companies just starting their adoption of virtualization or companies using ESXi and looking to take the next step. In addition, it’s a solution built for small businesses and branch offices (<20 servers).

The optional DotHill shared storage features a 2U 12-drive array providing an iSCSI interface to internal SAS or SATA disk drives and an external SAS interface to one or more expansion units. It comes populated with 15,000rpm drives, and offers the capability to mix both SATA and SAS technology within a single disk enclosure. DotHill also offers as standard 16 snapshots expandable to 56 snapshots.
